Candle care that protects the burn, the room and the people in it

Care affects how evenly a candle burns, but safety comes first. Read the product instructions and never rely on memory when the vessel, wax or candle form changes.

Before lighting

Place the candle on a level heat-safe surface, clear flammable materials, check the vessel for damage and trim an excessively long wick. Keep children and pets away from the burn area.

The first burn

For a jar or bowl candle, allow an even wax pool to develop according to the product guidance. Extinguishing too early repeatedly can create a narrow tunnel and waste wax.

During the burn

Never leave a flame unattended. Keep it away from drafts, curtains and air-conditioning streams. Do not move a hot vessel or touch liquid wax. Extinguish if the flame becomes unstable or produces unusual smoke.

Sculptural candles

Decorative forms may drip outside their original shape. Use a wide heat-safe dish and do not assume the display surface can catch hot wax safely.

Storage and end of use

Store cool, dry and away from direct sun. Stop using a damaged vessel or a candle that no longer has enough wax to protect the base from heat. Let everything cool completely before disposal or cleaning.
